BE AWARE, BE ALERT

We in Westwood Highlands are fortunate to live in one of the finest and safest neighborhoods in San Francisco. Unfortunately, there have been a number of break-ins in the area. A house in Westwood Highlands was broken into over New Year's weekend while the homeowners were away. A number of break-ins have occurred in the area have occurred between 4:30-10:30 pm. And, in early March, there was an attempted break-in in Westwood Park WHILE THE OWNERS WERE HOME.

Please be aware of any strange happenings or suspicious characters. Also, let your neighbors know if you're going to be away, so they can keep an eye on things. (Your neighbors can be your best burglar alarm. This being San Francisco, the city charges you $60/ year to have a home security system (up from $40 in 2006) and the police stop responding after 3 false alarms. Your neighbors will still keep an eye on things).

The Police request that you report any suspicious activity, even if it's a cut feeling (they are trying to establish patterns). Taraval Police Station - 759-3100/ SFPD Non-emergency 553-0123/ Anonymous Tip Line 759-3120

Welcome New Neighbors
As Welcome Wagon Chairperson of Westwood Highlands, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our beautiful neighborhood. If you have moved here in the last two years and I have somehow missed you please contact me at crleach@sbcglobal.net so I can personally give you our informative packet. It only takes a few minutes, depending on the number of questions you may have. Or if you're too busy, I can always mail you the packet. This packet includes Westwood Highlands CC&R's, local information, local map, and store discount information.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Congratulations and welcome to the new residents of Westwood Highlands. It seems like the number of newcomers has dwindled somewhat recently, especially after the big flurry in the last couple of years. All in all, the relatively low turnover here and very slight decrease, if any, in property values, is a tribute to the residents who maintain their property and the volunteer directors who maintain the by-laws. Westwood Highlands has the same look, feel, livability, and overall 'feel' it had in 1924.

Our Westwood Highland bi-monthly meetings are open to all residents. They generally last only about an hour and a half and include, but are never limited to; trees, dogs, in-law units, and car break-ins. Our job is to maintain the neighborhood according to the by-laws. We also discuss issues we have in common with the other 14 neighborhoods that belong to the West of Twin Peaks Central Council. www.westoftwinpeaks.org. All are invited.
— Dave Bisho

WEST OF TWIN PEAKS CENTRAL COUNCIL
Westwood Highlands has been a member of this umbrella group since 1936. Now there are 15 neighborhood associations that belong; mostly those single family groups that make up District 7. Each group sends one or two delegates and sometimes a guest or two to the monthly meetings that take place generally on the last Monday evening of each month at the Forest Hill Clubhouse on Magellan. Meetings usually begin with a police report followed by delegate news, correspondence, and an invited guest speaker or two. Issues always seem to include zoning, and any large development proposals slated for the west part of town.

Big projects currently scheduled include redesigning Stonestown, new housing at Ardenwood, Brotherhood Way, Park Merced, and State College. Delegates also discuss Stern Grove, Sutro Tower. Water rates, Laguna Honda Hospital, proposals for special use districts and, the hot topic of the day, the special election this summer where San Franciscans will be asked how they want to tax themselves to help close the city budget gap. www.westoftwinpeaks.com

GARBAGE RECEPTACLES
BE AWARE!!! The Department of Public Works has and will fine those residents whose Garbage Receptacles that are in view of "the public right-of-way (i.e. the street or sidewalk)." You can be fined $80 to $500 (this has happened to one of our neighbors). Check the DPW website for the regulations. Check the WHA website for a copy of the violation letter.

CITY FUN FACTS
James Van Ness was San Francisco's seventh mayor. One of his claims to fame was calling in the state militia forces to stop the hangings by the vigilantes. He was unsuccessful. He also created the Western Addition by ordering a survey of all of the property deeds involved, many of them phony, resulting in years of lawsuits. Also under Mayor Van Ness, San Francisco became a 'City and County.'

District 8 Supervisor Bevan Dufty's stepmother was Gloria Swanson and his godmother was jazz legend Billie Holiday. Bevan's father William Dufty co-wrote 'Lady Sings the Blues' about Holiday's life, with Billie Holiday herself.

Supervisor Harvey Milk was born in New York, started as a stock analyst, and supported Barry Goldwater for president.

It's believed that Mark Twain, then a reporter for the San Francisco Daily Morning Call, named his book 'Tom Sawyer' after a friend of his who was a San Francisco firefighter

Mel Blanc, the Warner Brothers cartoon voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and many others was born in San Francisco in 1908.

In 1973, Art Agnos, who later was elected mayor, was shot twice at point black range by the Zebra killer. He survived of course

It is against the covenants of Westwood Highlands for any resident to use his property here to operate a rug beating plant, an insane asylum, or to teach the oboe. If anyone tries any of these things, he or she will be reprimanded.

Note: Monterey Blvd. in the Westwood Highland area is scheduled to be repaved in December.

If you would like to have something included in the newsletter, send it to Robert at wisotz@myway.com, or bring it to the next board meeting. We welcome any information that impacts the neighborhood or general announcements you would like to share with your neighbors.
